But one can argue that some of today's Republicans have gone Dukakis one big step further by seeming to run on a platform of "electability, not ideology." It's as though only a party label were enough. That may work in a supermarket, but not in politics. Quite simply, it's a dangerous strategy for candidates to run on a platform of winnin

One myth currently popular on the political right is that the immigration debate pits populist conservatives in the Ronald Reagan mold against Big Business "elites" who've hijacked the Republican Party. Earlier today, former New York City Mayor Rudy Giuliani sent out a plea to supporters with "12 commitments" that aren't worth the paper its printed -- er, pixels in cyberspace.

Republican and Democratic candidates have generally avoided the most extreme expressions of these movements but seem content to drift in their currents. Few have offered policy proposals that reach toward the middle by challenging the orthodoxy of their party

Fred Thompson has had a relatively easy ride as he has flirted with a bid for the Republican presidential nomination. His strategists have found traction promoting him as the heir to Ronald Reagan

According to the American Conservative Union's ratings, Sen. Thompson is little more conservative than Sen. McCain. He voted for Sen. McCain's attack on free speech, voted for first-trimester abortions and, despite his recent opposition to the Bush-McCain Amnesty act, has a mixed record on immigration.

The neocon's blind crusade to land a pardon for Scooter Libby hit a new low last week when Fouad Ajami, the John Hopkins prof and post 9/11 media darling who turned out to be wrong every which way about war with Iraq, wrote a deeply offensive column in the Wall Street Journal beseeching President Bush to let Libby go free.

As the House Appropriations Committee met last week to consider four massive spending bills, something was missing: congressional "earmarks." Long dismissed as pork, earmarks had more than quadrupled under the Republican-controlled Congress. By some estimates, lawmakers were quietly adding nearly $19 billion a year in special projects.

The only way for Rudolph Giuliani to protect his status as the Republican Party's leading presidential aspirant is to distract his party's primary voters from the long list of issues that divide them from him.

It all started with the presidential debates. Ever since, I've been skittish. My nights are sleepless and days restless. I'm euphoric one minute, and worried sick the next. When I get this way, even my wife and the cats steer clear.

Our partners at MediaCurves.com played selected scenes from the CNN debate for 396 Republicans and independents. Watch the video to see how they responded to the clips in real time. (Note the interesting reactions to Mitt Romney's discussion of abortion and John McCain's warm words about "Hispanics.")

By Jack Kelly - Radical Islamists have been trying to kill Americans since long before the Iraq war began. There is no reason to suppose they will stop trying to kill Americans when the war in Iraq ends. Whoever finds it appropriate to crave political power on the delusional theory that as long as the government has been popularly elected, and that, under such a government, the power belongs to the people, and is power legitimate, has set himself up on the path to despotism...

Never in my lifetime has America's political elite been as disconnected from the people and as nakedly self-serving as it is today. Never has it been so self-absorbed, so disingenuous, and so full of unmerited pomposity.

The immigration "compromise" bill before Congress presents conservatives with a stark choice: In order to save its ideology, should the conservative movement declare its independence from the Bush administration and the GOP? The arguments for doing so are compelling.

George W. Bush has achieved what even a scandal ridden President like Richard Nixon could not do, and completely shattered the Republican Party alliance, alienated both it's libertarian and conservative wings, and tainted nearly every Republican official on the national level with the stink of his Administration.

When one candidate, Ron Paul, moves and speaks against the grain of both liberal and neo-conservative politicians, we wonder about this person. Some have called him a crackpot extremist because he doesn't fit their image of a "progressive" president. Why I'm impressed by Ron Paul? In one word: Integrity.

if you are as disgusted as most people are with the clowns running for office, then think before you repeat the mantra that it's everyone's duty to go vote. Maybe if the clowns starting getting only 10 or 15 percent turnout, more responsible people would go back into politics.

In defending the Iraq war, leading Republican presidential contenders are increasingly echoing words and phrases used by President Bush in the run-up to the war that reinforce the misleading impression that Iraq was responsible for the Sept. 11, 2001, attacks.

One assumes that Ron Paul knows he is not going to be the next president of the United States - or even the next Republican nominee. Yet the Texas congressman is campaigning hard, aiming particular ire and fire at Rudy Giuliani.
